Wilderness education can be slightly to moderately physically and mentally demanding sports and activates. Participants enter courses with the understanding that they are medically and mentally ready for the day’s activities.
Each students/guardian and adult participants will need to review and sign the Jefferson County and EWG waivers.
Do I need previous experience?
No previous experience is necessary. EWG instructs beginner to expert level courses in small to medium size groups. We also provide private classes, and just require a reservation.
What is your reservation and cancelation policy?
We require a 24 hour cancellation policy or there is a 50% cancellation fee. We do not have any fees if weather cancels the days activities. If bad weather occurs during the course, we will refund you 50% or reschedule your trip.
Where and when do you teach courses?
EWG operates all year round except major holidays at Staunton State Park, Jefferson County Open Space Parks, and Clear Creek County Open Space.
How do I get there?
EWG sends you a personal agenda detailing the days events, location, directions and other information. Course areas are between 20-45 minutes from the Denver metro area. You will meet your guides at the park entrance, trailhead, or prearranged meeting spot detailed in agenda. You are responsible for you own transportation and Uber is not a fast and reliable source at our course areas. We can arrange vans or buses for larger groups at a fee.
What do I need?
Climbing and Rappelling: EWG will provide harnesses, helmets and all related equipment. Hiking shoes/sneakers are recommended. No sandals, flip-flops or crocs. Clients must wear sneakers, tennis shoes or any closed toed shoe. Open shoes are more susceptible to injury on rock terrain.
Please bring at 32 ounces of water per person and snacks for the day. We burn a lot of calories at altitude. A backpack for your own water, snacks, sunscreen, camera and space for extra layers since the daily temperatures will greatly vary. It is better to have clothes to put on than none at all if the temperature drops.
EWG will provide snowshoeing or hiking equipment. Temperatures vary so layering clothing thru the day is common, especially ascending. Typical ski clothing is best with an extra layer or down jacket in your backpack. Sunglasses or ski goggles are highly recommended. There are privy bathrooms at the trailhead/parking lot and no fee for parking.
What are requirements for climbing and rappelling courses?
Clients need a waist size between 22-45 inches to fit in harnesses and weigh at least 45 lbs. Children need to be 8 years or older and accompanied by an adult.
Are dogs allowed on your courses?
For all courses except guided climbing, friendly dogs are welcome but must remain on a leash as required by Jefferson County Open Space Parks and Colorado State Parks regulations.
